Call for singers to join this year’s Elgar Festival Chorus

Singers are being invited to sing at the festival’s Gala Concert in June

Organisers of the annual celebration of the life and music of Worcestershire’s most famous composer are calling on singers to join them this year.

The Elgar Festival – which will take place between Tuesday 30 May and Sunday 4 June this year – is inviting experienced singers to sing Sir Edward Elgar’s much-loved work, The Music Makers, in the festival’s Gala Concert on Saturday 3 June at Worcester Cathedral.

To take part, singers will need to commit to a number of rehearsals during April and May with Chorus Master Stephen Shellard.

Rehearsals will be held on Saturdays at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Worcester on a number of dates in April and May.

There will also be a conductor’s rehearsal on Monday 29 May and afternoon rehearsals on the day of the concert. To apply: visit elgarfestival.org and click on Join the 2023 Chorus.

The deadline date for applications is Friday 31 March.

Kenneth Woods, Artistic Director of The Elgar Festival said : “It’s wonderful to be able to open up this concert and invite talented singers to join us in celebrating this year’s theme of ‘We are the Music Makers’.  Elgar would have been justifiably proud to see so many people enjoying and singing his music.  We look forward to it!”

The Festival – which was launched in 2018 as an annual event – was established by decree of Worcester City Council and is traditionally held on the weekend closest to Elgar’s birthday, 2 June 1857.

Since it began – lauded as ‘Critic’s Pick’ in both The Guardian and The Times – the ‘Elgar for Everyone’ Festival has doubled in size and scale and championed Sir Edward to as wide an audience as possible.
