Young Composers Competition at this year’s Elgar Festival

Young composers are being called upon to enter a new competition

Organisers of the annual celebration of the life and music of Worcestershire’s most famous composer have announced an exciting opportunity for young composers.

The Elgar Festival – which will take place between Tuesday 30 May and Sunday 4 June this year – has launched the competition, which will result in the winning composition being played at the event.

The organisers of the festival are asking young musicians to compose a fanfare suitable to celebrate this year’s Elgar Festival as well as the Coronation of King Charles III.

The winning fanfare will be played at the start of the 2023 Gala Concert in Worcester Cathedral by members of the English Symphony Orchestra brass section on Saturday 3 June.

The winner – and other finalists – will be invited to attend the Gala Concert.

Kenneth Woods, Artistic Director of The Elgar Festival said : “We are delighted to launch this fantastic competition as part of this year’s festival.  Encouraging our young composers to help us celebrate the life and works of Worcestershire’s most famous composer will not only add a new and vibrant element to the festival but also highlight the talent of future musicians.  We look forward to receiving entries!”

Scores and recordings can be uploaded on the website and contact details submitted.

Entry age groups are as follows:

Ages 11 – 16, Key Stage 3 and 4;

Ages 16 – 18, Key Stage 5.
