DownsideUp

DownsideUp was formed 10 years ago when cellist, Corinne Frost, asked double bass player, Stephen Warner, to join her for a performance of the Rossini Duet for cello and double bass in a charity concert and DownsideUp was born.

Having decided that an entire concert of cello and double bass duets was too much for any audience, they decided to expand their repertoire by including Stephen’s ability to play both the classical guitar and the ukulele. Adding in some piano playing and singing by Corinne, and the shape of this duo was settled.

The repertoire they perform is based upon the desire to play great melodies from the worlds of classical music, opera, films, musicals, jazz and easy listening, and hopefully playing a favourite tune for everybody.

As well as individual recitals, DownsideUp has played a major part in the Care Home Concert scheme organised by the English Symphony Orchestra. It is a project close to both their hearts.

The idea of bringing live classical music into care homes was initiated in 2007 by Corinne who became aware of just how hugely beneficial a live performance was to people who did not otherwise have access to musical stimulation in their daily lives. It is a privilege for DownsideUp to be able to take live music into dementia homes and see the positive impact their performances have on people’s lives.

Their performances are always intimate affairs where the programmes are introduced by the players themselves with anecdotes, stories and background facts as well as interaction with the audience.

The hope is that everybody leaves a DownsideUp concert with a smile on their face and a fantastic tune left singing in their minds.
