Elgar Introduction and Allegro Op.47
Vivaldi Concerto for two cellos in G minor
Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.1 in F maj BWV 1046
Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro is an extravaganza for strings. The playing forces are divided between a solo quartet and a string orchestra, and the work’s themes are by turn stirring and reflective.
Vivaldi was a prolific composer, and almost 500 of his concertos survive, written for various solo and combinations of instruments. Thirty of them feature the cello, but the G minor concerto RV 531 is the only one for two cellos. Two dramatic allegros in which the solo instruments answer each other virtuosically are separated by a short and melancholy largo.
J.S. Bach’s first Brandenburg concerto consists of four movements. The first features hunting calls prominently in the horns, while the last is a collection of dances, a minuet, a polonaise and two trios.
This concert has no interval and will last approximately 45 minutes
