Alice Elgar: Out of the Shadow
AN 81-YEAR-OLD university student will be among those celebrating their graduation from the University of Worcester next week.
Wendy Hill, a grandmother of three from Ledbury, recently completed a master’s of research degree and will graduate on Tuesday (March 4).
She has urged other mature students to pursue higher education.
“My message to other mature people who feel the need to achieve something academically is go to an Open Day and talk to people – students and tutors – who will welcome you and advise you,” she said. “I am very proud of myself.”
Ms Hill focused her studies on Alice Elgar, the wife of composer Edward Elgar, who was a published poetry and fiction author in her own right, with some of her work being set to her husband’s music.
The soon-to-be master’s graduate said she felt Mrs Elgar deserved more recognition. Her thesis will soon also be published in The Elgar Society Journal.
